Frederick N. "Chuckle" Richardson

FREDERICK N. “Chuckle” RICHARDSON passed away on Friday August 26, 2016. He was born May 31, 1941 to the late Walter Burton and Gertrude Richardson in Auburn NY where he graduated West High School and is a Member of Auburn High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in Baseball, Basketball, Football and Track

While still a young man himself, he began working with the youth in the community as a Recreation Leader and supervisor at the BTW Community Center, as Playground Leader and Director for the City of Auburn and a Fred served as an Auburn Police Officer before becoming a New York State Corrections Officer in 1966.  Mr. Richardson has a distinguished career, receiving numerous promotions, serving at several facilities and teaching many management and supervisory training courses before his retirement as a Superintendent for the NYS department of Correctional Services in 1992.  Fred served for 12 years as the Activity Director, Program Director and Executive Director of BTW, has worked for the United States Department of Justice National Academy of Corrections and was currently serving as the Executive Director of the Auburn Human Rights Commission.

In addition to being a Syracuse Chapter Certified Football Official and participating on both the Seward Elementary and West Middle School PTA, Mr. Richardson’s community involvement is extensive, seeming to do more community and board service than one man.  Some of his service includes; Auburn Community Development Corporation, Central NY Regional Planning Board, Technical Advisory Committee, United Fund of Cayuga County, Auburn Black Action Group, Cayuga County Youth Advisory, NYS Minority in Correction, BTW Board of Directors, Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center Board of Directors, Chairman of the Cayuga Home for Children, Auburn Education Foundation Board of Directors, and the NAACP among others.

Fred Richardson has received much recognition and awards for his efforts, some of which include; Key to the City of Auburn Distinguished Citizen Award, Outstanding Citizen Award YMCA of Syracuse/Onondaga County Millennium award, Catholic Charities of ………works of Love Award and many others which do not begin to show the gratitude the community has for his years of dedication.

Daughter:            Dawn Marie Richardson and her fiancée Donnie Kline of Bellefonte, PA

Son:       Buddy Hardeman and his wife Cindy of Arlington, VA

Grand Daughter:              Lana Hardeman of Manhattan, NY


Brothers:           Gordon B. Richardson and his wife Patricia, of Auburn, Alabama,

                        Howard A. Richardson and his wife Cynthia, of Warner Robins, GA

Sister:               Cynthia J. Richardson, of Auburn, NY

Sister-in-laws:    Waltrene Richardson of Rochester, NY  

                          Grace K. Richardson of Buffalo, NY

                        Jeanette Robinson and Dwayne of Syracuse, NY
                        Jeanine Navarro of Honeoye Falls, NY

Brother-in-laws: Willie Shepard of Rochester, NY

Kenneth Amos and his wife Mary of Washington D.C.

                        Harold Johnson and his wife Vickie of NC

In addition to his parents Fred was predeceased by his brothers Walter, Gerald, Melvin, and Jeffrey, and a sister Cassandra Shepard.

Visitation will be held at 11AM to 1PM on Wednesday August 31, 2016 at Auburn United Methodist Church, 99 South Street, Auburn, NY with a memorial service at 1PM.

Contributions may be made the Booker T. Washington Center,23 Chapman Avenue, Auburn, NY 13021 or to the Thompson Memorial AME Zion Church, 90 Franklin Street, Auburn, NY 13021 in memory of Frederick N. “Chuckle” Richardson.
