Merritt Fredrick Fletcher (Fred) past away Saturday, May 12th after an extended illness. Merritt was the first child born to Naomi Post Fletcher and Merritt Willard Fletcher. He attended local schools exceling in his studies. Merritt later received his Bachelor’s degree from Hampton Institute in Virginia.
His career began as the Executive Director for the Dunbar Community Center in Syracuse. He later became the Executive Director for the Booker T Washington Center in Auburn. Following a long stint in Community Service, Merritt then joined The Miller Bottling Co., where he worked his way into Management. Fred advanced his career even further when he was recruited by Anchor Hocking in Gulf Port Mississippi for a Plant Manager position.
In his retirement, Fred joined the Director of the Human Right Commission in Auburn.
Fred enjoyed public service, cooking and working with youth. In his younger years he was noted to be the best dressed as well as the Prom King.
Fred leaves behind his father, Merritt, his brother’s Glenn (Donna) and Michael (Gladys), his son Merritt Fitzgerald Auburn, his son Merritt F. Fletcher II (Budusie) of Alabama, his grandchildren Jazmyn and Justin, many nieces and nephews as well as a longtime companion and confidante, Susan Westover Gibbides.
Calling Hours are Thursday May 17, 2018 from 10AM 12PM at the Brew Funeral Home, 48 South Street, Auburn with the funeral following immediately after. Burial will be at Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn.
