Alan Emerson passed peacefully at his home on August 4, 2024, in the care of his family. Born in Sherwood Hospital in the hamlet of Sherwood, New York on July 12, 1938, he was predeceased by his parents, James R. Emerson and Wilhelmina Gabriel Emerson, his brother Guy Emerson, and his sister, Frieda Bulger. Alan graduated from North Haven High School in Connecticut, then returned to New York where he was known for his days as an avid stock car racer and hunter, forming lifelong friendships in the local community. Following his marriage to Faith Annette Gamlen Emerson on August 27, 1960, he assumed operations of the family farm in Sherwood. Over the course of 64 years of marriage, raising seven children, and opening his home to extended family, he was the best husband, father, and friend a person could hope for. Others knew him better for his work as an EMT with Southern Cayuga Ambulance, a member of the Poplar Ridge Fire Department, his work as a NYS Corrections Officer, his role as a Deacon at the Scipioville Presbyterian Church, and his time spent serving as a docent and on the Board of Directors at the Howland Stone Store Museum. He was very generous and giving of his time, highly regarded in the community, and always there for anyone who needed him. We were lucky to have him in our lives. We love him forever and will miss him deeply.
In addition to his wife, Alan is survived by seven children, Simone Lanning (Eric Lanning), Michele Shaw (Scott Shaw), Beverly Emerson (Donald Rafferty), Eric Emerson (Lorrie Emerson), Amy Emerson (Daniel DiSanto), Jessica Emerson, and Kialisha Prema Emerson; eight grandchildren, Kiryn Lanning (Kristina Moon), Curtis Lanning, Elizabeth Shaw, Benjamin Shaw, Terri Rafferty, Garrett Emerson, Reagan Emerson, and Aedan DiSanto; two great grandchildren, Emerson Lanning and Avery Lanning; his brother Peter Emerson, and several nieces and nephews, including Michael Emerson, Barbara Emerson, and Brian Sullivan.
A private celebration of life is scheduled for immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, the Howland Stone Store Museum, or Hospice of CNY.
