Gary Robert Whitehead, a dedicated public servant, loving husband, and cherished family man, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 20, 2025. A resident of Cayuga County, Gary lived a life marked by service, compassion, and a deep love for his family and community.
Born to Frederick and Gertrude (Pinckney) Whitehead, Gary was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Jim Whitehead. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 30 years, Eline (Christensen) Whitehead, and his step-daughters and their families: Jill Solfiell and her son Jackson Solfiell; Erin (Solfiell) Acquesta and her husband Brian Acquesta; and Kara (Solfiell) Otis, her husband Jesse Otis, and their children Addison Otis and Davis Otis.
Gary’s distinguished career began with his service in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he joined the New York State Police, rising to the rank of Sergeant and serving with distinction on Governor Rockefeller’s detail. After retiring from the State Police, Gary continued to contribute to his community, working as a driver for MacKenzie-Childs and later as a bailiff for the Cayuga County Courthouse, where his steady presence and professionalism were deeply valued.
A man of simple joys, Gary found happiness in camping, cheering for his favorite NASCAR drivers, and caring for the many rescue pets he and Eline welcomed into their home over the years.
Gary’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Calling hours will be held at Brew Funeral Home, 48 South Street, Auburn, NY on Tuesday, September 30th from 5:00-7:00pm. A memorial service will held on Wednesday, October 1st at 11:00am at Brew Funeral Home, followed by the burial at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Union Springs and a luncheon at the American Legion Post 1107. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local animal rescue organization in Gary’s honor, reflecting his lifelong commitment to giving animals a loving home.
