James Steve Taylor Obituary

James (Steve) Taylor, 89, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, at The Commons on St. Anthony in Auburn, NY.

Born on December 14, 1935, in Columbus, Ohio, Steve’s early years took him from Ohio to California, then to McMinnville, Oregon. He attended Northwestern University and later studied at the London School of Economics—an experience that sparked his lifelong interest in British history. He earned degrees from Northwestern (BA), Georgetown (MA), and Stanford (PhD).

Steve devoted more than four decades to teaching history, primarily at Wells College in Aurora, NY, and later at the University of West Georgia. During his academic career, he held multiple fellowships and published a number of scholarly books. He retired in 2002.

Steve had a love for travel, good food, great books, musical theater, and the sharp wit of a well-crafted limerick. His heart was forever split between the rugged beauty of the Oregon Coast and the tranquil charm of Aurora. He was especially fond of his dogs, who were constant companions over the years.

His 60-year marriage to Marie was one of love and devotion.

Steve is survived by his wife, Marie; their three children, Laura (Ithaca, NY), Mark (Rochester, NY), and Amy (Santa Rosa, CA); and four beloved granddaughters: Rhiannon, Morgan, Stelli, and Elsa.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Aurora, NY, followed by interment at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Wildlife Federation (https://support.nwf.org/)  or to the International Rescue Committee (https://www.rescue.org/).
