John Thomas Turney

John Thomas Turney, 96, of Auburn, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2020 in Gilbert, AZ. John was born in Union Springs, NY to the son of the late Frederick and Charlotte Clark Turney. John and his family moved to Attica where he graduated from Attica High School. After graduation John enlisted in the Army and served with an anti-aircraft division in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII. Upon discharge John moved to Auburn where he lived most of his life. After graduation from the New York Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1949, he worked for Nye-Wait Company for 18 years and was the general foreman for the Auburn Correctional Facility for 19 years until retiring in 1986.

John was active in numerous organizations in the Auburn area during his life especially American Legion Post #97 where he served as the Post Commander for several years. In addition John was member of the First Presbyterian Church in Auburn, member of the National American Legion for 77 years, American Legion Post #97, past Commander, Past Cayuga County Commander, past 7th District Adjutant, and past 7th District Vice Commander. He was also a member of the 40 et 8 as a Chef De Gare in Cayuga County Chapter Vioture #1064, life member disabled American Veterans Owasco 103 chapter, member of the International Veteran’s Association, past president city veteran’s council, past president HOBO Post 97, the local VFW Post #1975, old timer in the Auburn Elks Lodge #474 and member of the Auburn Lodge #124 F&A Masons for 56 years.

He is survived by;

Son:       Scott F. Turney and his wife Carlene of Auburn

Stepson:              Keith W. Riche and his wife Barbara of Florida

Several Nieces and Nephews

In addition to his parents John is predeceased by his wife Clarice Holmes Riche Turney.

There will be a memorial service at 1PM on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church, 112 South Street, Auburn with military Honors. Condolences may be made at www.brewfuneralhome.com
