Owen Thomas Redmond, age 54, of Auburn, NY
Mr. Redmond was born in Auburn, NY into a large family living on a dairy farm in Scipio Center, son of Richard and Margaret Redmond. He was proud to be the “Youngest” of 8 kids, a meaningful distinction.
On the farm, he fed calves, and showed great affinity for other animals, especially the cats, and his Corgi, Sancho. At a young age, he showed special care for his grandparents who lived with him in their final years.
Owen attended St. Bernard’s church, was confirmed, and was an altar server. During his school years at Emily Howland and Southern Cayuga schools, he was very active. He competed in the Special Olympics in local track events at Holland Stadium and later swam in regional meets at Oswego and the state-wide meet in Buffalo. Owen was immensely proud to graduate Southern Cayuga in 1990, from BOCES in 1992, and New Visions Continuing Education in 1999.
For many years, he enjoyed summers at Camp Columbus on Owasco Lake. Owen lived most of his adult life in Auburn in group homes managed by a fantastic organization now known as Mozaic. Owen was part of the community, swimming at the Y, and taking the bus to work and social events. He worked at Fillmore Glen state park, and later at the Ground Round and Domino’s Pizza restaurants. Owen was able to gain experience in local stage productions, playing Cliff in “Home for the Holidays” and was in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
Through his years in Auburn, Owen made countless friends and acquaintances with his outgoing personality, and is fondly remembered by strangers and family alike, always making them smile and have a better day. His family know him as the person who always remembered their birthdays, and embraced them with love and a gentle sense of humor.
