Doc used to come to our house and take care of my grandfathers and Moms horses,I used to go to him for all my dogs he was a great Vet and always made you feel good about leaving any animal with him.

"Doc" Underwood was my family's vet from 1967 until the 1990s, when my mom said "That's it: No more pets." He was always gentle and kind with patients and owners alike, no matter how distraught the owners were upon arrival. We thought of him as the American James Herriot.

I worked for the Cornell vet college until recently and asked about him once; they told me he "had to" give up the large animal practice in his 80s but was still seeing dogs, cats and other small animals! Rest in peace, Doc--you've more than earned it.

The world lost a great man and a great veterinarian. I'm sad to say I haven't seen him in years, but he always helped me when I was a kid and took whatever random sick animal to him. He was definitely one of my idols and inspirations to become a vet.

I have so many good memories of visits to King Ferry and the Underwood Farm as I was growing up. In later years, reunions in King Ferry were special times. Art took a genuine interest in people. He always asked about our work and children, and then would carefully listen and respond with thoughtful follow up questions. May the Lord give grace and comfort to his wife, children, and all those grieving from his loss.

I am filled with a great sadness to hear of the passing of Doc. He cared for many of my animals over the years...always with the utmost compassion and love. To me and my "kids" he was our hero. His kindness and caring will never be forgotten. My condolences to his family and to all those who knew and loved him. There are some in this world who are not merely people....they are treasures to forever hold in your heart. Our Doc was most certainly a treasure to all who knew him. <3

For many years "Doc" cared for our farm animals and pets, starting when I was a pre-teen and caring for my fur babies after I married. He helped me through the sadness of having to send a few of my babies over the Rainbow Bridge, and gave my latest fur baby her first inoculations. I cannot say enough good things about "Doc", as he was always patient, caring and sympathetic when the occasion called for sympathy. He treated all animals as if they were children, got down at their level and talked to them, at least in my presence. A wonderful man that will be one among many angels!

Doc was truly one of a kind. I remember him coming to my dad's farms was I was little. Years later I moved to King Ferry and he took care of my family pets. He always asked after my father. When my beloved dog needed to be put to sleep he came to my house to do so while we held her. Later when my husband went to his practice to pay for it, the receptionist said there was no charge because Doc said we had been through enough. He probably never knew how revered he was because he just did what he loved. Rest In Peace and sympathies to Doc's family.

Doc lived a long life, and lived it well, helping so many people and their animals. He helped my family many times.

I'd like to say a special thank you for the work on Sputnik -- an elderly tame barn cat that belonged to my fella. Sputnik had had his paws all burned, blistered, and burst (apparently) from stepping on a hot surface AND he had been coated in liquid manure, insuring the infection of the paws. We thought he was a goner, but Doc said -- Let me just try. He cleaned the four paws and wrapped them up and sent him home with antibiotic. The paws re-infected and stunk, but Doc cleaned them again, and Sputnik healed. Sputnik loved people but hated other cats and lived out his last days in DJ Grady's barn, where we checked up on him and he was happy and warm.

That's just one of the many pet stories I could tell -- so many pets helped, especially when we had almost no money to feed ourselves, much less pay vet bills. Doc was a good person and helped so many. He will be missed, but he deserves his rest. May his family find peace.

To all of Uncle Art's family, our deep sympathy.

When I was a little girl Uncle Art allowed me to tag along with him as he made his calls. He answered my many questions simply, patiently - as if I were a grown-up. While his work was important and fascinating, his kindness and respect made me feel important too.

Later as a college student my (soon-to-be) husband and I made many weekend visits. We felt welcomed and enjoyed late night chats over coffee (and sometimes TV horror shows). These deep and/or frivolous talks made me feel we were accepted as adults.

Our world is certainly diminished by the loss of Uncle Art, but we were all very enriched by his presence in our lives.
